7 Quick Takes: 8/9/13

Happy Friday! I don’t really have much of consequence to share with you today….it was a pretty boring week…but, lets see what I can come up with, here goes nothin’

1.) There was an accident just recently at our church campgrounds; a young boy (about 4 yrs. old) ended up being air lifted to University of Michigan Children’s Hospital. He is in ICU. Please pray for him and his family!

2.) It has been almost two months now and I am still having some pretty bad digestive issues….and I can’t seem to find a solution. I’m very reluctant to go see a doctor, but I’m thinking right now that may be my only choice…..(please note that if a doctor or nurse happens to read this and might be willing to answer a few questions, please send me an e-mail!!!). Okay, that will be the last time I beg for help, I promise!!

3.) We went bluebe5.)rry picking this week, but not one of us thought to take our phones and get some pictures……I will however try to post pictures of the pie, jars of jam, and maybe just a bowl of blueberries, because I know you are all just dying to see them right!?

4.) Our Vacation Bible School is starting up on Monday, please pray for our leadership, our workers, our Children’s Pastor (my dear ol’ dad!), and especially the kids that will be coming! Mom and I are doing snack and Bible memory, Dad is in charge, and we are hoping to have at least a hundred kids (but more would be awesome!). Please pray that lives will be  changed during this awesome week!

5.) I finished my quilt, but I’m not going to post pictures to this post. I’m going to give my quilt it’s own post later this week……this is because I have not been able to get any decent pictures of it yet, but I’m trying hard to get some decent ones! Look for a post coming soon!

6.) I am so looking forward to our family reunion tomorrow!! We only do this every two years, so it will be wonderful to see everyone! We have family coming in from out of state, new babies to love on, and lots of stories to tell and food to eat! It should be lots of fun!

7.) I’m linking up with Jennifer Fulwiler over at Conversion Diary as I do every Friday. Go check out all the other Quick Takes this week!!

7 Quick Takes: 7/26/13

Happy Friday! I spent my morning garage sale hopping. There are a lot of subdivision sales going on right now, so mom and I spent the day together looking for really good deals! I love days like this, where there is nothing really important happening so we can just do whatever, and go wherever……but then I remembered that it’s Friday, and I hadn’t done my Quick Takes yet, so here they are.

I finished the back side of my quilt this week! I’m so excited that I’m almost done with it!
2.) I mentioned in my opening that we went garage sale-ing today, but we also went to a new thrift store that just opened up in town. I found a pair of Nike running shoes BRAND freaking NEW! Never worn, for only fifteen dollars…..fifteen…..15….ONE FIVE…..15. I can’t believe it…I am going to put them to the test tonight!
3.) I finished another book on my summer list: The Cherry Cola Book Club by Ashton Lee. It was a really cute story, and an easy read. It’s about a library in a small town where the city council is thinking of closing the library. The town pulls together, they form a book club, and do everything they can to save the library. I might do a full review later on.
4.) I love this time of year, because I love to can! We have done lots of jam, and lots and lots of pickles! We made dill pickles, bread and butter pickles, rhubarb jam, blueberry jam, raspberry jam, cherry jam…….We freeze all the jam, and can using the water bath method….no pressure cookers around here.
I couldn’t think of anything for this one so here is a picture of the squares I used for the back of my quilt. I used up most of my scraps, but still have enough left to make a quilted tote bag.
6.) I’m heading out now to mow the lawn. I love mowing the lawn! I listen to the Big Boo Podcast from Big Mama and Boo Mama. I do a lot of my best thinking when I’m outside mowing the lawn, honestly I look forward to it every week.
7.) That’s enough rambling for me today. Make sure you stop over to Conversion Diary and check out all of the rest of the Quick Takes!
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Quilting Without a Pattern….

A metaphor for life perhaps? Maybe…..

So, I had this idea that I was going to make a quilt. I didn’t have a pattern, or any fabric at all….but I wanted to make a quilt. I went out and bought a couple yards of black fabric, lot of fat quarter bundles, and tons of remnants on sale. Still no pattern, and no plan in sight.

This is where Pinterest came in and basically saved the day. I found this pin….

….and I figured that I could do a quilt, following the same basic idea that my final product should resemble a bookshelf filled with books. Easy peasy right?!

Finally, after about two months of cutting, and sewing and repeating that process 50 million  thousand (Hey! Don’t judge, that’s what it felt like to me!) times, the top of this quilt is done!

Next I decided that I didn’t want a boring back. I was going to use a single piece of fabric, sized to fit the front then assemble it all and quilt it….well, no one ever accused me of not being ambitious so I started to cut into all of my scraps…..once again–no plan. No pattern.
On a non-quilt related note: I learned a lot about my self during this whole project 1.) I would not be able to ever quilt by hand….EVER! I love, love, love my machine and I think I’ve taken it for granted….never again! 2.) My seam ripper is my very best friend. I made lots of mistakes while sewing the books, and that seam ripper got lots and lots of use. 3.) I do lots of things on a whim….with nothing but a general idea in my head, and I think I need to do that more often. I can kind of be uptight about stuff, but if I can learn to just go with the flow, and not over analyze or over think….I can be happy with the outcome! 4.) I’m my own worst critic…and I really have to get over that. People look at the top and tell me how great it is and all I can see are imperfections. I’m still learning how to stop being so critical of my self…..
Anyway, back to the quilt. I just started cutting……4 1/4 inch squares to be exact. Lots of them. Two days it took me to cut all the scraps into the right size…for what? That I still didn’t know. Then I organized them by color Roy G. Biv style….cause that’s how I roll! After a day of thinking about it I started laying them out, again on a whim, no real though behind it…..or so I thought. Here you have it, the back of my quilt all sewn and ready to be assembled!
There is is, I can’t wait to start assembling the whole thing. I have my batting, and I’m all set to go! I just have to finish the embroidery on the bookshelf portion and that is almost done. Hopefully sometime next week I’ll start the quilting!
Good night all,

7 Quick Takes: 7/19/13

Happy Friday friends! I hope you had a wonderful week thus far! I had a few days off this week and am heading into the office this morning, so I’m going to get to the takes…..here goes nothin’

1.) I finally did it! I finished my quilt top! It took a while, but the hard part is finally over….now I can focus on doing the back. For the back, I’ll be using up all of my leftover fabrics and doing a patchwork for the back….but the point is, the front is FINALLY. FINISHED!!

Here is some proof!

I still have to do some embroidery on a few books, add a few more quotes to the empty spaces, but other than that….DONE! I REALLY, Really, really hope that you can tell at a glance that it is supposed to be a bookshelf…………..?
2.) I have really enjoyed having a few days off of work this week. Mom and I made jam, and pickles, and pies, and all kinds of other goodies! We have some wild black raspberries that grow in our yard, that we picked and made into about 4 pints of jam, and we still have lots more to pick!
3.) I have crossed a few books off of my summer reading list……but I’ve also added a few! I love finding great bargains, and if I can find bargain books, that is even better. On Monday I went up to Birch Run Outlets and was able to find a couple books for just a dollar each. So, while I’ve made progress on the reading list, the list grows each time I find a new book to read! Seems counter intuitive, but I like it that way!
4.) Camp Meeting starts on Sunday, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. Church is held on our district campground. Our church Choir and Orchestra leads worship every year for the opening service of Camp Meeting, and this year is no different. We will be doing some of our best a biggest numbers from the year, along with lots of congregational worship songs. I love Camp Meeting, mostly because we don’t camp! We drive down for the services on the nights that we can, and that’s the way I like it.
5.) Seriously though, this is a week that is pretty big in our denomination. Camp Meeting is like a week-long revival. We get amazing speakers, fabulous music, and you can really feel God at work during the services. We meet in a pole-barn turned tabernacle, in lawn chairs or folding chairs (pews if you want the front few rows.) and in true Nazarene fashion, there is usually something food related following a service.
6.) Many will receive a call to ministry this week. Many will be saved this week. Many more will be Sanctified this week. In fact that is where I was sanctified. Saved in VBS as a child, Sanctified at Camp Meeting as a teen. God gave me all of Himself, as undeserving as I was…and years later I gave all of myself to God. Camp Meeting is life changing, and I expect this year to be no different. Please pray for us as we enter into this week, not just for me but for each and every person that steps foot on the campground this week, and in the weeks to come. God is doing big things!
7.) I’m linking up at Conversion Diary, and on the off chance that Jen may read this, I’d like to say thank you! Thank you for hosting Quick Takes each week. I don’t even remember now how I found your blog, if it was through another blogger, or if I stumbled across it one day. I do remember the first time I added my link to Quick Takes though, and I was nervous as all get out, because number one, I’m not Catholic and that scared me. I don’t know what I thought, maybe I was afraid I’d be kicked out or something, I don’t know, that’s just me….I get nervous for no reason. Number two, I was afraid I’d never have anything to say, but I’m writing a couple times a week now, I’m actually keeping up this blog! That’s something I never thought would happen. Thank you for helping my find my voice! I have found so many wonderful blogs to read because of your weekly link-ups, and I’m not worried about that whole me-not-being-Catholic-thing, that’s the beauty of the body of Christ isn’t it?! So Jen, if you happen to read my little blog, THANK YOU!
Have an awesome weekend everyone!

7 Quick Takes: 5/24/13

Happy Friday!! It is so good to be home! I know I said that last week, but it’s been a glorious week at home! I was able to get back to work, and things are semi-normal around here. So, lets get to it shall we?

We shall,

1.) Please pray for my sweet mama, she and dad spent about 6 1/2 hours in the ER on Saturday after just getting home from vacation. Turns out mom has an enlarged/enflamed gall bladder, and it causes her some pretty severe pain. We think that dairy is her trigger food, so the ice cream we had Saturday night may be what sent her to the hospital. She also has some gall stones that they can’t really do much about…but praise the Lord she’s gone a week without an attack!

2.) My prayers go out to the folks in Oklahoma. What devastation, and heartbreak as they try to locate loved ones, and pick up the pieces. I can’t even begin to imagine what the mix of emotions must be. We were out to dinner Monday night, our whole church staff that is, and one of our pastors was on the phone trying to contact his family….in Moore Oklahoma. All through dinner and dessert he kept calling to find out how they are doing, they are doing fine, their homes are okay and they are safe. A friend of mine has a brother in law and sister in law in Moore, and they lost everything they own. That shows you how unpredictable these storms can be, and how powerful they are…but our God is greater. He will provide, He can comfort, and He gives peace.

3.) One of the best parts of my job, is getting in contact with parents to let them know that their children have received scholarships for church camp. The parents are always SO SO SO excited to finally send their kids to camp, and it really just makes my day! I e-mailed them all today to let them know, and even though I didn’t have anything to do with the approval of their applications, I’ve been getting thank you e-mails in return, from some crazy happy people! It makes my day to know that these kids get to go to camp, and their parents don’t have to worry about the financial burden. I seriously LOVE my job!

4.) I found some waste canvas this week at the craft store and let me tell you, I was pretty excited! Do you know what this means?! I can embroider on my quilt now! You know I’m doing the bookshelf quilt…..? Well, now I can embroider titles, flowers, golden snitch(es), sorting hats, Mockingjays, a colonial house, a french flag….the possibilities are endless, but I also just increased my workload. It’s totally worth it!

5.) I’m running out of things to say, so here is another picture from my trip to Disney

This is me with Lady Tremain, Drizella, and Anastasia. They are better known as Cinderella’s step mother and step sisters. Let me tell you, they are freakin’ hilarious! They interact so well with the crowd. If you are planning a trip to Disney and you find yourself in Magic Kingdom make it a point to meet these three. They are wonderful, you will have so much fun interacting with them!

6.) In one of my posts I talked about how I was going to use a Smash Book as my vacation scrapbook, remember?? No, that’s okay. I talked about it, and that is what I ended up doing. I even took the book with me so I could work on it on the road. I also took it into the park with me and used it as an autograph book. It worked out great. I was able to just add my pictures when I got home, and now I have a complete scrapbook. I’ll do a post on it soon, I promise!

7.) Another picture:

I seriously LOVE the Smash Book, I was able to work on it in the car. Yes, IN. THE. CAR! I didn’t do any of the writing in the car, but adding maps, and brochures, and other odds and ends was really easy to do in the car….and the hotel….and the boardwalk….and Downtown Disney….you get the idea. It travels well, and you can work on it wherever and whenever you like! I even went back to the craft store and bought another one for my next trip!
Go see Jen @ Conversion Diary for more QT’s, and enjoy your weekend!!

7 Quick Takes: 4/26/13

Happy Friday! I’m going to be quick today, because I’m heading into the office early today. So, let’s get right to it!

1.) I just made this darling skirt using THIS tutorial. Super simple, super cute, super comfy!

2.) I finally finished my first full row of blocks for my quilt….once I can get a decent picture I will post but trust me when I say it is my best work so far! It looks really cute, and everyone who sees it can tell right away that it should look like books lining a shelf! I’m excited to see how it turns out!
3.) Today after work, I will be finishing my (FINAL) semester as a nursing major. I’m excited to officially start studying Psychology, and seeing where God leads me with this new journey. I register for classes for the fall on Monday and am really looking forward to this semester!
4.) There are moments in life when I am so glad that no one is around to capture them on film of any kind. Thursday, mom and I battled a big, ugly, hairy spider that somehow found its way into our car. You should have seen it…..we looked ridiculous! You (like dad when we told him the story later), may think that we are wimps for freaking out over a “little” spider….but when you are trapped in a car with a far-from-little spider, you’d react the same way we did! It was pretty funny when we were telling others later on but at the moment not so much!
5.) I am so ready for vacation! It cannot come soon enough……….
6.) I’m boring today….sorry! My week was pretty uneventful so I didn’t really have much to share…
7.) Tomorrow I turn 20. I am spending the day with family, and that is absolutely all I want for my birthday! I couldn’t ask for anything better than hanging out all day with family!
I didn’t really have a lot to work with this week….so there you go 7 Quick Takes….go see Jen for more!

7 Quick Takes: 4/12/13

Happy Friday! Today, I will be spending the entire day catering for Casting Crowns….One of my all time favorite Christian Bands…..so let me apologize now that this may be a rushed post.
I’m going to get right to it:
1.) Check out my post Quilts, Pasta, and a Throwback to find a great recipe for some (amazing) homemade pasta! Trust me, you can’t go wrong with this recipe.
2.) I bought some more fabric today for my quilt, and while I still don’t have much progress to share with  you I figured I’d show you the fabric that I managed to find:
These fabrics, though they don’t really seem to match match at all, I know….I.JUST.KNOW that I can make them work!! I loved these bundles when I saw them and honestly couldn’t pass them up (it helped that they were on sale).

What I didn’t show you was that one black square in the last photo. I took several pictures of it but was never able to really get a good one. I’m using the black as a kind of “background” I didn’t want to just use plain black because that’s no fun. I bought four yards (I was being generous, this is my first quilt after all) of black with (in a light black/dark gray) has a print of music notations! I love it, and it is going to add the right bit of contrast, and dimension.
3.) It has been raining here for four days, and is supposed to turn to snow sometime today. I know the weather right now is wonky all over the country, so I am not alone in my weather woes….I just want to be able to get outside and uncover plants, and put in my garden….and just do spring-y things! I can’t wait to put my garden in this year. It is something that I really look forward to each year.
4.) I’m an addict. Not to anything detrimental to my health (only if I fall out of my chair laughing). No, I’m addicted to A&E’s Duck Dynasty. Yes, yes I am, and I am proud of it! This family is amazing! They are so rooted in their Christian faith and share it each week on their show. It is so great to see a family interact the way they do, and more importantly share their faith the way that they do….and they are SO.DANG.FUNNY!!
5.) I have a random question that has nothing to do with any of the above quick takes…..do you know of a good homemade-or-inexpensive blister prevention or treatment? I have terrible blisters on my feet from my tennis shoes. They are not new….I’ve had them for years, and wear them all the time but all of a sudden I have these awful blisters after only a few hours of wearing them? Normally I wouldn’t care but when the weather clears up and I start walking the neighborhood again I don’t want to deal with blisters every day. Any advice or remedies would be very appreciated!
6.) Only a few more weeks to the end of my spring semester. When it’s done, I have the summer off, and will then be starting at my new school, with my new major. I’m really looking forward to this new chapter that God is writing for me. There are doors being opened, and I’m moving forward and am totally committed to my new major. I’m excited to see where God leads me…
7.)  There is so much going on these next two weeks: work, small group, rehearsal, extended rehearsal, work, baking multiple batches of deserts, formal dinner for 75 (helping to cater), playing in the orchestra for Ordination service, catering a lunch for 50, delegate to two (or more) days of District Assembly, delegate to Missions Convention, work, work, small group, rehearsal, dress rehearsal, work, concert, final exam. Throw in Sunday morning services and some studying and there goes the next two weeks of my life.
So, until I wrote it out like that it didn’t seem so bad…….please don’t let me get in the habit of writing out my schedule like this! It’s crazy seeing how much I actually have to fit in, but I take it all a day at a time. Focusing on what is right in front of me…otherwise I get run down. I realize now it sounds like I’m complaining, and I don’t mean to…..this week I basically just wrote what came to mind……there is a lot jumping around in my brain right now, sorry!
Jen is not hosting this week, after just having her baby…..so, head on over to Grace at Camp Patton for more of this weeks Quick Takes! Be praying for Jen, and baby Joseph!

Quilts, Pasta, and a Throwback

I started my quilt this week. So far I have a partial block finished. Yes, only one….and only half done. I work on it when I can, which is admittedly not very often. I’m quite pleased though with what I have finished. I am using fat quarters to do each block, so I’m working on finding coordinating, and complimenting colors to use. I will show you pictures when I have decent ones to share…..Any suggestions on good quality fabrics or where to find them would be much appreciated!

For dinner last night I made homemade pasta for my family using this recipe (and cutting it in half). It was the easiest thing that I’ve made, and honestly the best dang pasta I’ve ever had! There is something so wonderful about fresh pasta, and with it being so easy to make I plan on making this A LOT! I will be using what was left over after making the noodles to make some Ravioli sometime next week. YUM!

My grandpa and I on a very early morning in August (many years ago), just before we headed to Canada for  a week on the lake as a family.

There you have it: Quilts, Pasta, and a Throwback….maybe this will catch on and be a trend! (Doubt it…..but it was fun anyway!)

Enjoy the rest of your week. There is a very good chance that my Quick Takes post could be quite late this week…..I will be catering all day for the Casting Crowns concert that our church will be hosting…..you will hear from me, just not as early as normal.
